Cobalife VB12 Plus Selenium is for treating and controlling Vitamin B12 and selenium deficiency in sheep and cattle.

Selenium is a trace element that is necessary for normal metabolism; it is an essential anti-oxidant and key component of proteins that have a role in muscle function, immune system and synthesis of thyroid hormones. Selenium deficiency can result in lameness, White Muscle Disease, reduced fertility and immunity, and reduced wool and milk production. Deficiency may occur at any year stage but is more likely to happen during stressful periods such as calving/lambing and growing periods of stock.

Vitamin B12 is a water-soluble vitamin that acts as a coenzyme for various metabolic functions, including fat and carbohydrate metabolism and protein synthesis. It is vital for glucose production in ruminants, which is essential to meet the high energy demands of growth and lactation. Vitamin B12 deficiency results in reduced appetite and growth rates, ill thrift, infertility and reduced wool and milk production.

Deficiency in Vitamin B12 may occur at any stage of the year but is more likely to happen at the following times:

When animals are under prolonged periods of stress due to adverse weather or when intake of feed is low or lacking nutritional value
During stress from calving/lambing or transportation
During growing periods of stock.

There are two strategic treatment times that supplementation with Vitamin B12 can optimise your production response.

Before mating to help improve feed utilisation, especially when livestock are stressed from high production demands or adverse weather. Improved feed utilisation may lead to improved body condition and fertility.
Before calving/lambing time when stock is under high stress. This will assist ewes and cows during the rigours of gestation and early lactation and supply a dietary source of Vitamin B12 to their young to meet their daily requirements and improve weight gains.

Directions Of Use

Dosage and Administration:

Lambs: 0.5 mL at marking or weaning.
Sheep: 1 – 1.5 mL pre-lambing.
Calves: 2 – 3 mL from 2 months of age.
Cows: 4 – 6 mL pre-calving.

The number of animals treated per 500mL pack:

Calves: Up to 250
Cattle: Up to 125
Lambs: Up to 1000
Sheep: Up to 500

Use the contents within 24 hours of first broaching.
Discard the unused portion.
Give dose by subcutaneous injection only.
The frequency of dosing should be related to the severity of the deficiencies. For instance, for sheep in extremely deficient areas, repeat the dose every 2-3 months.
In less deficient areas, repeat dose every 5-6 months or as found necessary.

Tips For Use

General Directions:

Avoid carcass damage:

Sterilise all injection apparatus by boiling (or equivalent) before use.
Avoid the use of strong disinfectants on the apparatus.
Maintain cleanliness at all times.
Keep needles sharp and clean. Replace frequently.
Use the shortest needles possible, certainly not exceeding 15 mm.
As far as possible, avoid injection in wet weather or under dusty conditions.
This product should be injected only under the skin.
If possible, inject high on the neck behind the ear.

Contraindications:

This product is contraindicated for use when selenium intake from pasture is high or selenium is provided by other means (such as top dressing, vaccine, pellets, or selenium drenches) if blood selenium levels at treatment are high.
Users can determine selenium status by consulting their veterinarian.

Precautions:

This product should not be administered to sheep with known liver damage concurrently grazing plants which contain pyrrolizidine alkaloids, such as Patterson’s Curse or heliotrope.

Storage:

Store below 25°C (air conditioning).
Protect from light.
